Saturday April 17, 2010 - Vintages Release

I am now using a 5-star rating system which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to the stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good …
3.5 = Good … 3 = Average

I’m always looking for good value and I’m not afraid to give or take away a half mark for it – I’ll let you know when I’ve done so.

I am sitting here with the LCBO Vintages mag in my hand and there seems to be two focuses on the cover, and three inside – more confusion from our liquor monopoly.  Veneto is the main region, there’s a minor on Eco-Wines and then an even smaller Tasmanian focus (ie: a single producer).  Two of them I can tell you about, a lot of the Eco-wines weren’t available at the tasting I was at.

Veneto (Italy) …
This region is most known for Valpolicella and its off-spring: Amarone and Ripasso(a) … but there are plenty of other wines and real fantastic values coming out of this region:
Monte del Fra Bardolino 2008 ($12.95 - #134544) – this is an easy recommend with raspberry liqueur and maraschino cherry notes, and the price is excellent, an extra half mark just for that. (****½)
Tenuta Sant’Antonio Scaia Rossa 2008 ($13.95 - #165688) – another great value wine, this one has big black fruit on the nose, while the palate is delicious and subtle with red fruit and spice. (****)
Maculan 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon ($14.95 - #987701) – another fruit forward number at a good price, you’ll even find coffee and spice on the finish. (****)
Monte del Fra Tenuta Lena di Mezzo 2008 Valpolicella Classico ($13.95 - #160226) – a great starter Valpolicella for those who claim they do not like red wines.  Lots of red fruit with a touch of vanilla and spice. (****)
Fumanelli 2008 Valpolicella ($12.95 - #687186) – this one is for the summer and can even be chilled before enjoying.  Ripe cherries and raspberries, this one is very palate pleasing, buy by the case and enjoy thru the hot months. (****½)
Sartori Vigneti di Valdimezzo Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore 2007 ($16.95 - #160374) – this one is what you’re looking for in a Ripasso, chocolate, blackberry and lots of plum flavours. (****)
Masi Serego Aligheri Vaio Armaron Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2004 ($69.95 - #462812) – big plum, big taste, lots of ripe fruit, this one is almost liqueur like in the mouth … there’s also some alcohol heft at 15.5%. (****)
Tenuta Sant’Antonio Selezione Antonio Castagnedi Amarone della Valpolicella 2006 ($42.95 - #685107) – chocolate, plum, coffee with good acidity on the finish, delicious now and for the future. (****½)

Tasmania ...
Josef ChromyJosef Chromy 2008 Pinot Gris ($22.95 - #162974) – nice fruity white with lovely apple and pear notes. (****)
Josef Chromy 2009 Pepik Pinot Noir ($21.95 - #162990) – bright red cherry nose, good raspberry-earthy palate, the acidity is just right - good for immediate enjoyment and mid-term cellaring. (****)

Argentina …
Chakana 2009 Bonarda ($13.95 - #003525) – this is the next Argentinean grape you’ll be searching for in the future, and it’s gonna be big.  Nice spice an blackberry notes with cassis, black cherry and some earthy notes – good tannins brings this one together in the mouth and on the finish – get it while it’s cheap. (****½)
Dona Paula Estate 2008 Malbec ($17.95 - #661819) – intense and inviting nose with blackberry and other black fruit along with cocoa and spice, lovely finish. (****)
Zolo 2009 Unoaked Chardonnay ($12.95 - #144717) – fresh and fruit driven with a touch of the tropical, good price for this patio sipper, extra half mark for value. (****)

Australia …
Gemtree 2008 Bloodstone Shiraz / Viognier ($18.95 - #022111) – this one has an easy entry into the mouth with rich fruit, plum, blackberry, and hints of cocoa.  The finish is long with a little bit of toast and vanilla.  This wine continues to impress. (****)
Water Wheel 2008 Bendigo Shiraz ($19.95 - #700815) – fresh red fruit, touch of spice, hint of chocolate all wrapped up in a nice tannin grip. (****)

Chile …
Terranoble 2007 Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon ($16.95 - #046268) – big mint note accosts the nose and it follows on the palate, you’ll also find lots of body and lots of fruit amongst that big hit of mint. (****)

France …
(Midi)
Domaine Boudau 2008 Le Clos ($16.95 - #149989) – raspberry really pops in your mouth with this one, lovely fruity notes with sufficient tannins and hints of strawberry on the finish … yummy. (****½)

Germany …
Max Ferd Richter Riesling Kabinett 2007 ($15.95 - #160556) – apple, mineral, apricot and sweet pear.  Good balance of flavour, sweetness and acidity. (****½)

Greece …
Limnos Wines 2008 Muscat de Limnos ($11.95 - #061119) – here's something for dessert, but don’t let what I am about to say scare you off about this wine, it really is fantastic, but it smells like lemon cleaning fluid.  Great lemon Pledge nose, the palate has a cleaning fluid taste but ends with a pleasant lemon-ginger finish … all in a good way.   Very good wine, chill and enjoy – or polish the furniture, either way you won’t be disappointed. (****½)
Tselepos Moschofilero 2009 ($18.95 - #724583) – very summery drink with sweet melon and citrus. (****)

Italy …
(Puglia)
Leone de Castris Elo Veni 2008 Negroamaro ($15.95 - #995696) – nice black fruit, smooth and juicy. (****)

New Zealand …
Spy Valley 2009 Sauvignon Blanc ($14.95 - #686675) – Kiwi Sauv Blanc fans should flock to this wine, the price is just right for a multiple bottle purchase and the wine has lots of grapefruit and green grass on the nose and palate with lots of acidity and a long finish – it’s exactly what you’re looking for.  Drink over the course of the summer – extra half mark for value. (****½)

Portugal …
Quinta do Infantado Tawny Port ($16.95 - #168633) – price really plays a factor here, this Tawny is loaded with acidity so it doesn’t come off too sweet, plenty of nutty and cherry nuances; this is a real winner. (*****)
Quinta do Noval LB Finest Reserve Port ($19.95 - #956656) – another delicious dessert wine from Portugal, this one has good spiciness with chocolate and black cherry; the thickness of this wine will coat your mouth with delectable goodness. (****½)

South Africa …
Anura 2005 Reserve Merlot ($24.95 - #157461) – you get fruit, cocoa and chocolate, licorice with subtle spice and just a hint of grit … a very good Merlot for South Africa. (****)
Café Culture 2009 Pinotage ($13.95 - #072710) – I’m not a coffee drinker but I love this wine, massive coffee smells and mocha/coffee in the mouth … now easier to get into with a screw cap. (****)

United States …
(California)
Clos du Bois 2007 Pinot Noir ($18.95 - #161273) – big cherry fruit on the nose and palate, this is a very fruity Pinot, if you like ‘em that way you’ll like this one. (****)
Ravenswood 2007 Vintners Blend Merlot ($17.95 - #505065) – a really juicy Merlot that is BBQ / get-together ready, bring out to the patio, pour everyone a glass and watch the smiles. (****)

Saturday April 3, 2010 - Vintages Release

I am now using a 5-star rating system, which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to the stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good …
3.5 = Good … 3 = Average

I’m always looking for good value and I’m not afraid to give or take away a half mark for it – I’ll let you know when I’ve done so.

A look at Spain and some Bordeaux wines in this release from Vintages … a little change in format to this time out, hope you like it.

Spain …
Due to the nature of Spain and its many wine styles I have to forego my usual paragraphic format for a more straight forward approach to presenting my Spanish picks in this Vintages release.  Spain is offering up some of the best wine values these days, in both drink-now and age-worthy wines including many in this release under $20 (and in some cases excellent values under $15).  I do believe it is time for you to discover Spain and it’s wines.
Dessert Wines …
Torres Floralis Moscatel Oro ($16.95 / 500ml - #0642173) – this one tastes like a spiced Moscato D’Asti; honey and cinnamon with slight floral note on the palate along with sweet spiced orange and nutmeg. (****½)
Red …
Artazuri 2008 Garnacha ($13.95 - #0080812) – smoky violets, red berries and pepper; the palate is loaded with sweet fruit, silky, supple with tasty chocolate on the finish. (****½)
Bodegas Ateca 2008 Old Vines Garnacha de Fuego ($12.95 - #0162685) – nice flavours here, red berry, sweet cranberry and chocolate. (****)
Bodegas Lan Reserva 2004 ($19.95 - #0042929) – spicy, violet, vanilla, herbal notes and tannins. (****)
Gladium 2006 Tempranillo Crianza ($15.95 - #0162677) – nice fruit, sweet plum and lots of red fruit. (****)
Los 800 2005 ($19.95 - #0075150) – nice cherry and chocolate on the palate, very liqueur like, there’s also some nice blueberry notes. (****)
Sabor Real Toro 2006 ($13.95 - #0172932) – big, sweet, red fruit with hints of chocolate, very tasty with heady 14.5 alcohol. (****)
Sherry …
Osborne Pedro Ximenez 1827 Sweet Sherry ($17.95 - #0047944) – I’m a sucker for Pedro Sherries and this one is right up my alley with its sweet, thick raisin and pecan pie notes; so tasty.  (****½)
Osborne Premium Oloroso Medium Sherry 10RF ($15.95 – 0087536) – I expected this one to be sweeter on the palate than it is.  Fig and dates go up into the nose and there’s even some nutty notes, sure they translate onto the palate but as I said dried than you would expect. (****
Sparkling …
Codorniu Pinot Noir Rosé Brut Cava ($16.95 - #0665372) – dry citrusy nose that has a slight spice to it, the palate is lightly raspberried and green appled. (****)

Argentina …
Chakana 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($15.95 - #0093807) – dark fruit, mocha, peppered with spice and hints of vanilla. (****)
Humberto Canale 2008 Caracter Patagonia Intimo Malbec ($12.95 - #0144725) – sweet black fruit, chocolate, vanilla and plum. (****)

Australia …
De Bortoli 2007 DB Selection Petite Sirah ($14.95 - #0694802) – mocha and coffee notes, slight peppery nuances, quite pleasant to sip on. (****)
Heartland 2008 Stickleback Red ($14.95 - #0116574) – the nose is minty and black fruited, there’s also a floral note with chocolate in the background.  Smooth and tasty this one has lots of black cherry in the mouth, there’s no doubt this is an Aussie wine with it’s big 14.5% alcohol. (****½)

Austria …
Laurenz Und Sophie Singing Gruner Veltliner 2008 ($14.95 - #0087627) – citrus, peach pit, floral with good acidity and nice flavour. (****)

Canada …
(Ontario)
Malivoire 2008 Gamay ($17.95 - #0591313) – click on wine name for full review (*****).

France …
(Cotes de Bordeaux focus)
Chateau Courriere-Rongieras 2005 ($19.95 - #0125492) – from this month’s French “cotes” focus, it was the best of a small lot.  Earthy with big black fruits, harsh tannins, age 5+ years to soften them; it’s a good price for something this age-able, if drinking now you best have a steak handy. (****)
(Burgundy)
Recolte du Domaine Voarick Clos Paradis Mercurey 1er Cru 2005 ($21.95 - #0086603) – earthy, black cherry with sweetened black fruit, nice acidity and mild tannins. (****½)

(*****)
(Southwest)
Rigal les Terrasses 2008 Malbec ($13.95 - #0148718) – lots of fruit on the nose; on the palate it’s dry with raspberry, dark cherry, mocha along with some earthy and tobacco notes. (****)
(Alsace)
Domaines Schlumberger Les Princes Abbes Pinot Gris 2007 ($19.95 - #0021253) – sweet honeyed peach, delicious apple with a hint of sweetness. (****)

Saturday March 20, 2010 - Vintages Release

I am now using a 5-star rating system which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to those stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good …
3.5 = Good … 3 = Average

I’m always looking for good value and I’m not afraid to give or take away a half mark for it – I’ll let you know when I’ve done so.

The two focuses for this release are Easter Entertaining and Ontario wines (mostly whites) – too find out more about Ontario wine visit my website, www.OntarioWineReview.com, as for your wines for Easter read on:

Easter Entertaining …
Don’t take these wines as the gospel for Easter entertaining, there are plenty of wines that go with whatever your serving, so feel free to experiment; but according to the LCBO this is what they suggest and here’swhat I recommend from those suggestions:  We’ll start with this Italian offering, Caposaldo 2008 Pinot Grigio ($13.95 - #0159608), full of fruit with some Pinot Blanc-like sweetness, good acidity makes this one a very nice pre-dinner sipper (****).  Riesling fans will enjoy this Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler 2008 Riesling ($13.95 - #0596601) from Germany: apple blossom, honey, peach and a titch of citrus, very nice, sippable and all at a good price (****).  You’ll also find another nice white from Italy in the form of this Batasiolo Bosc DLA Rei Moscato D’asti ($16.95 - #0028175) this is one of my favourite Italian wine styles.  Moscato has a bit of fizz and loads of grapefruit / ginger ale flavours, you’ll also find apple, peach and other fruity notes – a great starter (****).  Red wine fans take note; we kick off entertaining with red sipping on this Calera 2007 Pinot Noir ($31.95 - #0933044) it has a red fruit nose and black fruit flavours, there’s just a titch of earth here and a real smoothness in the mouth.  Merlot fans will rejoice in the Clos La Chance 2006 Hummingbird Series Violet-Crowned Merlot ($19.95 - #0161307), black cherry, cocoa, cassis and a touch of spice (****).  There’s more California wine for pleasing the coming crowds: Rancho Zabaco Sonoma Heritage Vines 2007 Zinfandel ($19.95 - #0434605), a nose that’s fully recognizable to Zin fans and the flavours are also there: chocolate, cherry, plum, cola, vanilla, it’s all there (****½).  You’ll also want to catch a Cab for the holiday table and the Rodney Strong 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon ($24.95 - #0050427) will do the trick nicely.  Juicy red raspberry, cherry notes, plum and lovely red fruit palate (****½).  One cannot entertain with wine without a stop in France, that’s why I’ll recommend this Bouchard Pere & Fils Cote de Beaune-Villages 2006 ($24.95 - #0714998), black cherry, raspberry, good acidity, tannins and earthiness rounding it all out nice.  A little more robust wine would be the Domaine Croze-Granier Cuvee Reserve Cote du Rhone 2007 ($14.95 - #0736371), fabulous value with its minty, spicy, blackberry sweetness, sweet cherries and vanilla – interesting and involving on the palate, this one is to savour with or without food (****½). There’s the Renzo Massi Erta E China 2007 ($14.95 - #0132308) with chocolate, blackberry, black cherry, coffee and nice tannins (****).  And finally, for those that want to put a little pink action into their Easter celebration, Chateau Bellevue la Foret Rosé 2009 ($13.95 - #0219840), dry and cherry with a raspberry finish (****).

Saturday March 6, 2010 - Vintages Release

I am now using a 5-star rating system, which appears at the end of each review; here’s the key to those stars:
5 = Outstanding … 4.5 = Excellent … 4 = Very Good …
3.5 = Good … 3 = Average
I’m always looking for good value and I’m not afraid to give or take away a half mark for it – I’ll let you know when I’ve done so.

The two focuses for this release are Chile and St. Patrick’s Day – not a Whiskey guy so you are on your own there, but I do like Chilean wine so I got ya covered:

Is it Chile in here …
We start with the Emiliana Novas Winemaker’s Selection 2007 Chardonnay / Viognier / Marsanne ($18.95 - #063909), now I remember this one was a star at this year’s Chilean preview tasting, but 6 months of age has taken the oomph out of this wine.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s still very good but it’s lost a little of its freshness.  Silky smooth, spicy, floral, lots of tree fruit and vanilla (****).  Errazuriz 2008 Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc ($13.95/375ml - #427054), is a tasty dessert-style wine, and not too sweet, with light yet sweetened Sauvignon Blanc flavours (****).  Another from Errazuriz, 2008 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc ($14.95 - #143198), citrus, melon, mac apple and crisp acidity (****).  Moving on to the reds, there’s the Casa Lapostolle 2008 Merlot ($16.95 - #405712) that’s everything you like in your Chilean Merlot: blackberry, plum and chocolate; juicy and supple (****).  One of my top Chilean picks is from Errazuriz, 2008 Single Vineyard Don Maximiano Estate Carmenere ($18.95 - #143180), it kicks off with vanilla and chocolate, two of the world’s two great food groups, then there’s some juicy blackberry bringing it all together – succulent and tasty (****½).  Montes Alpha Carmenere 2007 ($19.95 - #143230) has smoky violet notes on the nose with black fruit, vanilla, cinnamon and a toasty structure in the mouth, the finish is full of blackberry and chocolate (****).  Then there’s the Tabali 2008 Reserve Especial Pinot Noir ($19.95 - #047514) good flavour with licorice and spice (****).  Finally, there’s my second top-rated Chilean:  Tabali 2006 Reserva Merlot ($14.95 - #093740), chocolate, black cherry with a hint of mint – rich, supple, juicy and tasty (****½).  One thing’s for sure, Chilean wines will shake, rattle and roll your world.

Argentina – Red …
Chakana 2009 Yaguarete Collection Malbec ($12.95 - #003509) – Juicy black fruit on both the nose and palate all at a great price, an extra half mark for value. (****½)
Kaiken 2007 Ultra Cabernet Sauvignon ($19.95 - #135202) – sweet blackberry and plum with chocolate and spice. (****)
La Posta Angel Paulucci Vineyard 2007 Malbec ($15.95 - #075515) – sweet chocolate, black cherry with hints of pepper and spice. (****)

Australia – Red …
Ferngrove 2007 Shiraz ($19.95 - #090282) – this Aussie Shiraz shows elegance over the usual heavy-handed fruit bombiness.  Lovely with dark fruit and chocolate. (****½)
Piping Shrike 2007 Shiraz ($18.95 - #048504) – black in colour while being jammy and chocolaty – not a bad combination at all. (****)
Rosemount Estate 2006 Show Reserve GSM ($34.95) – GSM is Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre, and this is a good one: vanilla and cherry take the lead with hints of mocha and spiced pepper on the finish. (****)
Stonier 2008 Pinot Noir ($24.95 - #025338) – sour cherry and sweet cherry meet full fruit flavour. (****)
Australia – White …
Ingoldby 2008 Chardonnay ($14.95 - #047647) – nice fruit with hints of vanilla, this one shows a deft hand with its restrained use of oak. Good price too. (****)

France – Red …
(Bordeaux)
Chateau Lilian Ladouys 2004 ($29.95 - #162578) – full bodies black fruit, spice and cocoa – tough tannins could see this one age nicely over the next few years. (****)
